Abbey Falls was originally called “Jessie Falls” during the British era, named after the daughter of a British officer.

History:

Talacauvery is believed to be the birthplace of the River Cauvery, a river that holds great religious significance in South India. According to some stories, the river originates as a spring here and later transforms into a mighty river.

it attracts thousands of devotees, especially during the Tula Sankramana festival. Nearby, Bhagamandala is the place where Cauvery meets two other rivers, Kanike and Sujyothi, forming a holy confluence.

Bhagamandala, the nearby temple town, is home to the Bhagandeshwara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva.

I suggest you visit this place at the time of sunrise because in the evening this place becomes the most crowded place.

History:

Raja’s Seat has historical significance as the viewing point for the kings of Coorg. The garden was a retreat for the royalty, offering them a peaceful place to reflect and admire the beauty of their kingdom.

Dubare Elephant Camp was once a training camp for the royal elephants of the Mysore Empire. Today, it serves as a conservation centre where visitors can learn about elephant behaviour and the importance of wildlife preservation.

Namdroling Monastery, also known as the Golden Temple, is one of the largest Tibetan settlements in South India. Located in Bylakuppe, about 35 km from Madikeri, this monastery covers about 80 acres of area, and it has a 40-foot-tall statue of lord Buddha.

the Namdroling Monastery, also known as the Golden Temple, is my favourite place in my Coorg visit. If you are planning a Coorg trip than Please don’t forget to visit this sacred place.

It is the largest teaching centre of the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhism in South India. The monastery is famous for its vibrant murals, gold-painted statues of Buddha, and peaceful surroundings.

History:

Established in 1963, Namdroling Monastery is a centre for Tibetan Buddhism and is home to over 5,000 monks and nuns. The monastery plays a vital role in preserving the cultural heritage of Tibetan Buddhism.

According to mythology, the River Lakshmana Tirtha originated when Lord Lakshmana shot an arrow into the Brahmagiri hills to quench Lord Rama’s thirst during their exile. This event gives the falls a religious significance.

Mandalpatti has recently gained popularity as a tourist spot due to its scenic beauty and the thrilling off-road jeep rides it offers. It’s an excellent spot for both nature lovers and adventure seekers.

Nagarhole was once the hunting ground for the kings of Mysore. In 1988, it received the status of a national park and later became part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Today, it plays a crucial role in wildlife conservation.

The origins of Madikeri Fort date back to 1681 when it was first built by Mudduraja, the ruler of Coorg. He intended the fort to serve as a stronghold and a palace for his reign. However, over the years, the fort underwent numerous modifications and was reconstructed several times by different rulers, most notably Tipu Sultan and the British.

Built By: Mudduraja in 1681.

Reconstructed: Tipu Sultan rebuilt parts of the fort in stone in the late 18th century.

Colonial Influence: After Tipu Sultan’s defeat, the British took over the fort and made further changes, including the construction of a clock tower and a church.

Architectural Features:

Madikeri Fort showcases a blend of local and colonial architectural styles, reflecting the multiple phases of reconstruction by various rulers. The fort is characterized by large stone walls and intricate carvings.

Day 2: Dubare and Bylakuppe
