Hello friends!! If you are looking to plan a Jodhpur Jaisalmer trip then you are at the right place. In this guide, I am going to share my experience of how to plan a Jodhpur Jaisalmer trip, including everything from how to reach there, where can you stay, the best places to visit, and transportation tips.
By the end of this, you have a 3-day itinerary planning that will help you to spend your best time in Rajasthan.
Planning a trip to Jodhpur and Jaisalmer is like stepping into the heart of Rajasthan’s culture, beautiful palaces, and golden deserts. Whether you’re exploring the “Blue City” of Jodhpur or the “Golden City” of Jaisalmer, this journey offers a 360 degree of experience with history, architecture, and adventure in the Thar Desert.
With the proper planning, you can get the most fun from a 3-day trip to these two beautiful cities.
How to reach Jodhpur and Jaisalmer
When I was planning my trip, the first thing I had to figure out was how to get to Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. Thankfully, both cities are well-connected, making my travel relatively easy.
By using air
The nearest airport to Jodhpur is Jodhpur Airport (JDH), which is well-connected to major cities in India like Delhi, Mumbai, and Jaipur. From the airport, the city centre is just 5-6 kilometres away, and you can hire a cab or auto-rickshaw. Jaisalmer, on the other hand, has a smaller airport, Jaisalmer Airport (JSA), which has less connectivity. The majority of tourists opt to fly to Jodhpur and then take a train, bus, or cab to Jaisalmer (about 4-5 hours away).
By using trains
Both Jodhpur and Jaisalmer are well-connected by rail. The Jodhpur Junction railway station is a major station on the North Western Railway route. direct trains are available to Jodhpur from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Jaipur. Once you reach Jodhpur, you can catch another train to Jaisalmer Railway Station, which takes around 6 hours.
By using the road (my personal favourite)
Road travel is a great option if you want to enjoy the landscapes of Rajasthan. Jodhpur is well-connected by highways, and buses run regularly between cities. From Jodhpur, you can take a bus, or cab, or even rent a car for the journey to Jaisalmer, which is nearly 280 kilometres away.
Special tip: I suggest you use road transportation while you are travelling from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer so that you can enjoy the desert landscapes of Rajasthan.
Distance from Delhi to Jodhpur: Around 600 kilometres.
Distance from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer: Around 280 kilometres.
where to stay in Jodhpur and Jaisalmer
When it comes to accommodations in Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, you can find everything from luxurious heritage hotels to budget stays. I opted for a mix of both to get a feel of the royal lifestyle in Jodhpur and to experience desert charm in Jaisalmer.
Stay in Jodhpur/how do I stay in Jodhpur
Budget Stay: I stayed at The Blue House, a family-run guesthouse located in the heart of the old city. It offered amazing views of Mehrangarh Fort from the rooftop and had a very homely atmosphere. The rooms were clean and affordable, and the hosts were incredibly welcoming.
Luxury Stay: If you’re looking for a luxurious experience, I would recommend RAAS Jodhpur. It’s a boutique hotel that offers a mix of modern luxury and traditional Rajasthani architecture, all set against the backdrop of the fort.
Stay in Jaisalmer/how do I stay in Jaisalmer
Budget Stay: I stayed at Hotel Fifu, which is a charming little hotel just outside the fort area. The rooms were well-maintained, and the staff went out of their way to make my stay comfortable.
Luxury Stay: For a more luxurious experience, the Suryagarh Jaisalmer is the best option to enjoy desert luxury. It’s a bit costly, but if you’re celebrating a special occasion then go for it. The hotel has a beautiful ambience.
If you’re planning to stay a night in the desert (which I highly recommend), there are some desert camps around the Sam Sand Dunes. I stayed at the Prince Desert Camp, and it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me—sleeping under the stars with endless sand around.
